Mosquito Control in Doreen: Why Your Backyard Turns Into a Buffet at Dusk
You step outside with a drink on a warm evening, and within five minutes you’re swatting your ankles and heading back in. Mosquitoes can make a perfectly good backyard unusable from late spring through to autumn, and they’re harder to shift than most people expect.
Doreen has what mosquitoes like. You’re close to the Plenty River and the Yan Yean Reservoir parklands, newer estates often include stormwater wetlands and basins, and summer storms leave water behind in every bucket, pot saucer and clogged gutter. Mosquitoes only need a small amount of still water to breed, and they can do it right under your nose.
Emergency Pest Control Doreen helps homes, rentals and businesses get on top of mosquitoes. We inspect the property, look for breeding sites and shady resting spots, and talk you through the options and the price before any work starts. We’ll also show you what you can fix yourself, because that part makes the biggest difference.
Below you’ll find where mosquitoes breed, the types you’re likely to meet, a ten-minute yard check, how to protect yourself and what our visit involves. For everything else we do, see the Emergency Pest Control Doreen homepage, or call 0399690821.

Where Mosquitoes Breed Around a Doreen Home
Adult mosquitoes lay their eggs on or near still water, and the young live in it until they grow wings. Take away the water and you take away the breeding. Here are the usual suspects, and it’s usually more than one.
Pot plant saucers and buckets
A saucer under a pot, a bucket left out in the rain or a watering can that never gets emptied is all a mosquito needs. Containers are the most common backyard breeding sites.Blocked gutters and downpipes
Leaf litter holds water in gutters long after the rain has stopped. Gutters that don’t drain freely can be an overlooked source on single and double-storey homes alike.Rainwater tanks
Tanks with open tops, damaged screens or gaps around the inlet let mosquitoes lay straight into the water. Check that mesh is intact and fits snugly.Pet bowls and bird baths
Still water that sits for days is attractive. Tip it out and refill it regularly, and give bird baths a scrub when you do.Tarps, pool covers and trailers
Folds and dips in a pool cover or tarp collect rainwater. Boats, trailers and wheelbarrows left under the open sky do the same thing.Drains, ponds and unused pools
Stormwater pits, ornamental ponds without moving water and neglected pools can breed mosquitoes by the thousand. Fix pumps and keep pool water circulating.Mosquitoes You Might Meet in Doreen
Different mosquitoes bite at different times and breed in different places, which tells us where to look first.
| Mosquito | When It Bites | Where It Breeds | Worth Knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Backyard mosquito (Aedes notoscriptus) | Mostly in the day, with a peak around dusk, often at ankles and legs | Small containers: saucers, buckets, gutters, tyres and bromeliads | It lives right around your home, so fixing small water sources makes a real difference |
| Common banded mosquito (Culex annulirostris) | Mainly at dusk and through the night | Larger bodies of still water such as wetlands, dams, ponds and swampy ground | Often comes from nearby water, so some of the problem may be beyond your fence |
| Southern house mosquito (Culex quinquefasciatus) | Mostly at night, often indoors | Stagnant, nutrient-rich water such as blocked drains, stormwater pits and septic overflow | A buzzing in the bedroom at night often points to this one |
Names are tricky from a bite alone. Our technician works out what’s likely from the time of day, the location of the bites and what we find around the property.
Signs You Have a Mosquito Problem Close to Home
A few mozzies in summer are normal. These signs suggest they’re breeding nearby.
Bites on your legs and ankles
Repeated bites around the ankles and legs while you’re outside in the day or at dusk often point to backyard breeders very close to the house.
Buzzing in the bedroom
Mosquitoes finding their way into bedrooms at night usually mean gaps in fly screens or open doors and windows after dark.
Wrigglers in standing water
Tiny, jerky swimmers in a bucket or saucer are mosquito larvae. If you can see them, you’ve found a breeding site.
A cloud as you walk through shrubs
Mosquitoes rest in cool, shady spots during the day. If a cloud lifts when you brush past dense plants or walk under a deck, they’re sheltering there.
A spike after rain
If numbers jump a week or so after wet weather, water has collected somewhere and breeding has taken off.
Nearby wetlands or ponds
Properties next to wetlands, dams, creeks or drainage basins tend to see more mosquitoes, and part of the problem may come from beyond your boundary.
The Ten-Minute Backyard Check
Grab a bucket and walk around your property after rain. You’ll probably find a few of these.
Start at ground level. Tip out saucers, buckets, toys, bottle caps, wheelbarrows and anything else that holds water. Turn containers upside down or store them under cover.
Look up. Check gutters and downpipes for leaf litter, and look for sagging sections where water pools. Clear them and make sure water flows freely.
Check the tank and pool. Make sure rainwater tank inlets and overflows have intact mesh, and keep pool water circulating and covered when you can. If a pool has been left for a while, it needs attention before it turns green.
Walk the shady spots. Under decks, behind sheds, in thick shrubs and ground covers are where adult mosquitoes rest. Trim back dense growth near the house and let some light and airflow in.
Repeat weekly in warm weather. The whole routine takes ten minutes, and doing it once a week through summer can cut down mosquito numbers noticeably. If you find a breeding source you can’t fix, such as a blocked stormwater pit, tell us when you call.
Our Mosquito Control Process in Doreen
Every yard is different, but the visit follows the same steps.

1. You get in touch
Ring 0399690821 or use the form. Tell us when and where you’re getting bitten, whether it’s mostly outdoors or inside, how long it’s been going on, and whether you’re near a wetland, creek or pond.
2. We walk the property
Our technician checks the yard, gutters, tanks, drains, ponds, sheds, decks and garden beds for standing water, and looks for the shady, sheltered spots where adult mosquitoes rest. We also note gaps in fly screens, doors and windows.
3. We explain the options
You’ll hear what we found, which mosquitoes are likely, what we recommend and what it costs, and you decide before work begins. We’ll also tell you how to prepare the yard and what to expect afterwards.
4. Treatment and breeding-site advice
We carry out the treatment agreed in your plan, which depends on the property and what the inspection finds. We also point out every breeding site you can fix yourself, because treatment works best when the water is dealt with as well.
5. Follow-up and prevention
Some problems need more than one application, and weather can bring new breeding in quickly. If mosquitoes are still a problem after the expected time, contact our office and we’ll talk through the next steps. When Mosquitoes Are Worst in Doreen
Warmth and standing water are what they need, so the seasons make a big difference.
Peak mosquito season. Warm weather speeds up breeding, and storms leave water in every container. Empty saucers and buckets weekly and keep gutters flowing.
Warm days and autumn rain keep numbers up, and leaf fall can block gutters and downpipes. Clear them before the wet season.
Cold weather slows breeding right down, though some adults shelter in sheds, garages and dense vegetation. A quiet time to fix gutters, tanks and drains.
Numbers build as it warms up. This is the best time for a yard inspection and for fixing breeding sites before summer takes off.
Protecting Yourself Outdoors
Even the best yard clean-up won’t stop every mosquito, especially near wetlands. Some mosquitoes in Victoria can carry viruses, so avoiding bites matters. If you feel unwell after being bitten, see your doctor.
Cover up at dusk
Long, loose, light-coloured clothing makes it harder for mosquitoes to bite. Mosquito activity often peaks around dusk and dawn, so that’s when to cover up.Use repellent properly
Repellents with ingredients such as picaridin or DEET work well when used as directed on the label. Reapply as the label says, especially after swimming or sweating.Fix fly screens
Check screens on windows and doors for holes, and make sure they fit snugly. Close doors at dusk or use screen doors where you can.Get some airflow
Mosquitoes are weak fliers, so a fan on the patio can keep them away from where you’re sitting.Cut the shade near seating
Dense shrubs right beside the barbecue area are where mosquitoes shelter by day. Trim them back or move seating away.Protect babies and prams
Mosquito nets over prams and cots help protect little ones who can’t wear repellent. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice if you’re unsure.Mosquito Control Service Details

Mosquito Control Doreen FAQs
Anywhere water sits still. Common spots include pot plant saucers, buckets, blocked gutters, rainwater tanks with damaged mesh, pet bowls, bird baths, tarps, pool covers and neglected ponds or pools. In warm weather, mosquitoes can breed in very small amounts of water.
Usually it’s a mix of standing water on your property, shady spots where adults rest and nearby wetlands, creeks or basins. Numbers often jump after rain, when water collects in containers and gutters. An inspection helps work out which of these is behind it.
Treatment can help reduce mosquitoes around your property, but it works best alongside fixing breeding sites. If water is still collecting in gutters, saucers and tanks, new mosquitoes keep emerging, so we point out what you can fix as part of the visit.
Our technician walks the property, looking at the yard, gutters, tanks, drains, ponds, sheds, decks and garden beds for standing water and shady resting spots. We then explain what we found, the options and the price before any work begins.
Mosquito activity builds through spring, peaks in summer and stays high into autumn while it’s warm and wet. Cold weather slows breeding right down in winter, which makes it a good time to fix gutters, tanks and drains.
Tip out containers weekly, clear gutters, check tank mesh, keep pool and pond water moving, trim dense shrubs near seating and repair fly screens. When you’re outside at dusk, wear long, loose clothing and use repellent as directed on the label.
