Ant Control in Doreen: The Trail on Your Bench Is Only Half the Story
You wipe the bench, and twenty minutes later the trail is back. Ants are tiny, but they’re organised, and the handful you see in the kitchen are usually workers from a nest that could hold thousands. Squash the ones on show and the nest just sends out more.
Doreen gives ants plenty to work with. Lots of homes here have paving, garden beds and mulch running right up against the walls, and that’s exactly where ants like to nest. Add a warm kitchen, a pet bowl on the floor and a leaky tap in summer, and you’ve got a standing invitation.
Emergency Pest Control Doreen treats ants in houses, townhouses, rentals and commercial premises. We follow the trail, look for the likely nest and entry points, and treat with baiting and perimeter treatment depending on what we find. You’ll hear the plan and the price before any work starts.
Below you’ll find why ants come inside, the types you’re likely to meet, the signs worth watching for, what not to do before we arrive and how treatment works. For everything else we do, head to the Emergency Pest Control Doreen homepage, or call 0399690821.

Why Ants Come Inside
Ants aren’t wandering into your kitchen by accident. They’re after something, and once a scout finds it, the rest follow her scent trail. Knowing what’s drawing them makes treatment work better and keeps the problem from returning.
Water
In summer especially, ants come in for moisture. Leaking taps, wet sponges, pet water bowls and damp bathrooms all count, and it’s often the reason you see them in rooms with no food at all.Food
Crumbs and sugary spills are the obvious ones, but ants also go for honey, fruit, pet food, and the greasy film behind the stove or under the toaster. An open bin is a feast.Shelter from the weather
Heavy rain can flood a nest, and a very hot or cold spell can push a colony to look for somewhere steadier, like a wall cavity or the gap beside a slab edge.Easy ways in
Ants squeeze through gaps far smaller than most people expect: cracks around pipes, door and window frames, weep holes and cable entries. One gap is enough.Nests close to the house
Paving, mulch, garden edging, lawn and pot plants beside the walls all make good nest sites. A nest a metre from the kitchen wall is a very short walk for a worker.Sweet stuff on plants
Aphids and scale on garden plants leave a sugary residue that ants collect. A tidy kitchen won’t help much if there’s a steady supply of it outside the back door.Ants You Might See Around Doreen
Not every ant is the same, and the type changes where we look for the nest. If you can, take a clear photo before you call.
| Ant | What It Looks Like | Where You’ll Find It | Worth Knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ants | Small and shiny black | Trails along walls, window frames and benches, with nests in trees, eaves, wall cavities and roof voids | They tend to use the same route every day, which helps us trace the nest |
| Argentine ants | Small, light to dark brown | Wide trails indoors and out, with nests in soil, mulch and under pavers, often near damp spots | Colonies can have several nests, so one nest isn’t always the whole story |
| Sugar ants | Larger, with a black body and an orange-brown band | Active at night around kitchens, with nests in soil and timber outside | They’re after sweet food, so you may only see them after dark |
| Meat ants | Large, dark body with a reddish-purple head | Gravel mounds on lawns, driveways, paths and nature strips | Mostly an outdoor nuisance and rarely a kitchen problem |
| Green-head ants | Slender with a metallic green-blue sheen | Nests under rocks, paving and logs, with workers foraging alone on the ground | They can give a painful sting if disturbed, so don’t poke at the nest |
Photos help, but they’re not always enough. Our technician confirms what you’re dealing with during the inspection.
Signs You Have an Ant Problem, Not Just a Stray Ant
One ant on the bench is a scout. These are the signs that point to a colony nearby.
A trail that keeps returning
Single-file lines along skirting boards, bench edges, window sills or pipes. If you wipe it away and it’s back within the hour, there’s a nest feeding it.
Soil heaps or small holes
Fine piles of soil or sand along paving edges, cracks in concrete or the base of walls often mark a nest entrance just beneath the surface.
Ants at the sink, bin or pet bowl
The same spot, day after day, tells you what they’re after. It’s usually water, a sweet spill or pet food.
Winged insects near lights or windows
Winged ants usually turn up in warm, humid weather and suggest a well-established colony close by. Winged insects can also be other things, so keep a few in a jar and tell us when you call.
Ants in power points or appliances
Warm, enclosed spaces appeal to ants. Please don’t spray liquid into power points or appliances. Call us and we’ll talk through the safest approach.
Trails up trees and shrubs
Ants climbing stems or trunks are often tending aphids or scale. The nest may be at the base of the plant or under nearby paving.
Why Wiping and Spraying Rarely Fixes It
A can of surface spray feels satisfying because ants drop dead on the spot. The trouble is that those ants are a tiny slice of the colony. Back in the nest, the queen or queens keep laying, and fresh workers take over the trail within a day or two.
Some ants also respond badly to being sprayed. Instead of dying off, a stressed colony can break up and set up several smaller nests, which makes the problem harder to find and harder to treat. Wiping the trail clean can make the next one easier to spot, but it won’t shift the nest.
Baiting works differently. Workers carry the bait back to the nest and share it around, so it reaches ants you’ll never see. That’s why baiting is a big part of how we treat ants, alongside perimeter treatment around the house. It also means please don’t spray or wipe away trails near a bait, because you’ll cut off the delivery route. If you’ve booked us in, put the spray away until after the visit.
Our Ant Treatment Process in Doreen
Every property is different, but the steps are usually the same.

1. You get in touch
Ring 0399690821 or use the form. Tell us where you’re seeing ants, what they look like, how long it’s been going on, and whether it’s inside, outside or both. A photo helps.
2. We trace the trail
Our technician follows the ants back from where you see them, checks kitchens, bathrooms, laundries and roof spaces where we can reach them, and walks the outside: paving edges, garden beds, mulch, lawn and the base of the walls. We’re looking for the nest, the entry points and whatever is drawing them in.
3. We explain the plan
You’ll hear what we found, what we recommend and what it costs, and you decide before work begins. We’ll also tell you what to prepare and which areas to leave alone afterwards.
4. Baiting and perimeter treatment
We apply baiting and perimeter treatment suited to the ants and the property, inside and outside as needed. The aim is to reach the nest, not only the ants you can see, and to put a barrier around the house.
5. Aftercare and follow-up
Ant activity can look busier for the first week or two while they feed on the bait, and some problems need more than one application. Leave baits where they are and avoid wiping or vacuuming treated areas until we say it’s okay. If ants are still around after the expected time, contact our office and we’ll plan the next step. When Ants Are Busiest in Doreen
You can see ants any month of the year, but the pressure shifts with the weather.
Peak ant season. Hot, dry weather sends ants indoors looking for water, so trails across benches and bathrooms are common. Keep bins sealed and fix leaking taps.
Cooler, wetter weather can flood outdoor nests and push colonies towards the house. A good time to check gaps around doors, pipes and weep holes.
Outdoor activity slows, but colonies can shelter in warm spots such as wall cavities and near hot water pipes. A trail in winter often means a nest very close to the house.
Ant trails reappear as the weather warms, and winged ants can appear. An inspection now can head off the summer rush.
Keeping Ants Out Between Visits
Treatment deals with the colony you’ve got. These habits make it less likely that a new one moves in.
Wipe up straight away
Sugary spills, crumbs and drips on benches and floors are what scouts are looking for. Pay special attention to behind the toaster and the edge of the stove.Seal up the pantry
Keep honey, sugar, cereal and jam in airtight containers or the fridge, and rinse sticky jars before they go in the recycling.Deal with pet food
Pick up pet bowls after meals if you can, and don’t leave water bowls overflowing. Wipe the mat or tray under the bowl as well.Fix leaks and damp spots
Repair dripping taps and pipes, and wipe down wet sinks and bathroom surfaces. Ants are as interested in water as they are in food.Cut back what touches the house
Trim branches and shrubs that brush against walls or the roof, since they act as ant bridges. Keep mulch and garden edging back from the wall where you can.Check the gaps
Look at cracks around pipes, door and window frames and cable entries. Filling them takes away easy routes in, though it won’t stop ants that already live inside.Ant Control Service Details

What Affects the Cost
The size and type of property, the type of ant and how widespread they are, whether nests are inside or outside, how easy the areas are to reach, and whether the visit is urgent or after hours. You’ll know the price before work begins. Our guide to what determines the cost of pest control in Doreen goes into more detail.
Getting Ready for Your Visit
Clear benches and the areas under sinks, put food away, and move pet bowls out of the way. Make sure we can reach the outside edges of the house, including paving and garden beds along the walls. Don’t spray around the trail, and leave any trail near the problem area alone so we can follow it. If you rent, let your landlord or property manager know about the visit. Our Pest Control Instructions page lists what to prepare for each type of problem, and areas that aren’t prepared may not be treated. If anyone at home is pregnant, elderly, very young or has a breathing condition, or if you have pets, tell us before we start.
Why Doreen Residents Call Us for Ant Control
Ants look simple, but a trail is only a clue. Here’s how we approach it.
5+ Years in Pest Management
Our team has 5+ years of experience in pest management. That helps when we’re reading a trail, working out where a nest probably sits and spotting the gap that’s letting them in.
We Look Inside and Out
The kitchen is where you see the ants, but the nest is often outside. We check both, along with paving edges, garden beds and the base of the walls.
Straight Answers on Price
We tell you what we found and what we recommend, and you hear the cost before any work begins. If ants are still around after the expected time, you can contact our office.

Ant Control Doreen FAQs
Put food away, wipe up spills, fix any leaks and work out where the trail is coming from. A trail that keeps coming back usually means a nest nearby, and surface sprays rarely reach it. An inspection finds the nest and the entry points so the treatment targets the source.
Workers carry bait back to the nest and share it, so it can reach ants you never see. Spraying only affects the ants it touches. Our ant treatment uses baiting together with perimeter treatment, depending on the ants and the property.
Winged ants and termites can look alike at a glance. Ants usually have a narrow waist and bent antennae, while termites have a thicker body and straight antennae. If you can, keep a few in a jar and take a photo, then tell us when you call.
Activity can look busier for the first week or two as the ants feed on the bait, and some problems need more than one application. Leave baits where they are and avoid wiping or vacuuming treated areas. If ants are still around after the expected time, contact our office and we’ll talk through the next steps.
Yes. Nests are often outside, so we inspect paving edges, garden beds, mulch, lawn and the base of the walls as well as the inside of the house. Tell us where you’ve spotted ants when you book.
Treatment deals with the colony we find, but a new one can move in if the conditions stay the same. Wiping spills, sealing food, fixing leaks and trimming plants away from the walls all help. If ants return, get in touch and we’ll look at what’s drawing them.
It depends on the size and type of property, the type of ant and how widespread they are, whether nests are inside or outside, and how easy the areas are to reach. You’ll know the price before work begins. Call 0399690821 or send an enquiry through the form on this page for a quote.
