Bee Removal in Doreen: First Work Out What You’re Dealing With

A steady stream of insects disappearing into a gap under the eave. A low hum from inside a wall. A fist-sized ball of bees hanging from your lemon tree. They’re all bee problems, but they’re not the same problem, and the right response is different for each.

Doreen sits right next to bushland and green corridors, and newer estates have plenty of eaves, weep holes and roof cavities that suit a colony looking for a home. Properties near the bushland boundaries also see native bee activity, which is a very different thing to a hive of honey bees or a nest of European wasps.

Emergency Pest Control Doreen removes nests and treats cavities at houses, townhouses, rentals and commercial premises, and we try to minimise harm to native pollinators where practical. Our first job is to identify what you have, because mistaking a harmless native bee for a wasp nest helps nobody. You’ll hear the plan and the price before work begins.

Below you’ll find how to tell bees from wasps, the signs of a colony in your wall or roof, what to do (and not do) in the meantime, and how our visit works. For everything else we do, see the Emergency Pest Control Doreen homepage, or call 0399690821.

Our first job is to identify what you have, because the right response is different for a swarm, a hive in a wall, a native bee burrow and a wasp nest. Read on to learn how to tell them apart, or see our pest control Doreen homepage for the full list of services.

    Bee and Wasp Identification

Bees, Wasps and Look-Alikes You Might Find in Doreen

People often call every striped, buzzing insect a bee. Telling them apart changes everything about how we deal with them.

InsectWhat It Looks LikeWhere You’ll Find ItWorth Knowing
European honey beeGolden-brown and slightly fuzzy, about the size of a thumbnailSwarms on branches and fences, and established hives in wall cavities, roof voids, eaves and tree hollowsAn important pollinator. A hive inside a building is a bigger job than a swarm outside
European waspBright yellow and black, shiny and smooth, with no fuzz and long legs trailing in flightNests in wall cavities, eaves, ground holes and garden structuresAggressive around food, especially in late summer and autumn
Paper waspSlender, brown-orange body with long legs that dangle in flightOpen, papery nests like an upside-down umbrella under eaves, pergolas and shedsFairly easy to spot, and often found where you walk or sit
Blue-banded beeSmall, round and fuzzy, with pale blue stripesSoft mud walls, mortar and clay banks, where females dig small burrowsA solitary native bee that doesn’t form large colonies and rarely stings
Carpenter beeLarge and robust, often metallic black or blueBurrows in dead timber, such as fence posts, old pergolas and tree stumpsSolitary and usually not a threat, though they’re big and noisy

A clear photo from a safe distance helps a lot. Don’t get close to a nest to take one. Our technician confirms the insect during the inspection.

    Signs of a Colony

Signs You Have a Colony in Your Wall, Roof or Yard

Most bee problems start with one small clue. These are the common ones.

    ✈️

A flight path to one spot

A steady stream of insects coming and going from the same gap in an eave, wall, vent or hollow is the clearest sign of an active nest or hive.

    🔊

    Humming inside a wall

A low, constant buzzing from a wall or ceiling, especially on warm days, often means a colony is inside the cavity.

    🍯

    Wax, honey or staining

Sweet smells, honey stains or wax on a ceiling or wall, or warmth in one patch of wall, can mean a large, established hive.

    🌳

A cluster hanging in a tree

A ball of bees on a branch, post or fence is usually a swarm resting while scouts look for a new home. It may move on within a day or two.

    🪟

    Dead bees on windowsills

A scattering of dead or confused insects on windowsills and light fittings can mean a colony is somewhere inside the building.

    💦

Bees at pools and pet bowls

Bees collect water to cool their hive. Lots of activity around a birdbath, pool edge or dripping tap suggests a colony close by.

Swarm, Hive or Native Bee: What’s the Difference?

These three situations look alike from a distance, but they call for quite different responses.

    A swarm

A swarm is a group of honey bees on the move, usually clustered on a branch or fence while scouts search for a permanent home. They’re often calm because they have no nest or honey to defend, and they commonly move on within a day or two. Keep people and pets well back.

    An established hive

Once a colony moves into a wall, roof void or hollow, it builds wax comb, stores honey and defends the entrance. This is the situation that needs a professional. The longer it’s left, the bigger the colony and the comb inside get.

    Native bees

Many native bees are solitary, which means one female digs one small burrow. They don’t form large colonies, and most rarely sting. They’re valuable pollinators, so it’s worth confirming what you’ve got before assuming it’s a problem.
    Before You Call

What Not to Do If You Find a Hive or Nest

Don’t block the entrance. Bees that can’t get in will look for another way, and that can lead them into the house through a light fitting or a gap in the cornice. A blocked entrance also leaves a colony trapped inside, which often ends up as a bigger mess.

Don’t spray or smoke the entry hole. Household sprays rarely reach a whole colony, and they tend to make the bees defensive. The mess that’s left behind can also draw other pests.

Don’t go near it with a ladder or a lawn mower. Vibration and noise can set off a defensive response. Keep children, pets and visitors away from the area, and avoid mowing or trimming close to a nest.

Know the warning signs of an allergic reaction. If someone has trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or feels faint after a sting, call 000 straight away.

Do take a photo and note the details. Where is it, how long has it been there, and when are the bees busiest? That helps us decide how urgent it is and what we’ll need.

Our Bee Removal Process in Doreen

Every nest is different, but the visit follows the same steps.

    Call or enquire icon

    1. You get in touch

Ring 0399690821 or use the form. Tell us where the insects are, how many you can see, how long they’ve been there, and whether anyone in the household has been stung or has an allergy. If you can safely take a photo from a distance, send it through. Urgent situations can receive a same-day response.
    Inspection icon

    2. We identify and inspect

Our technician confirms whether it’s honey bees, native bees or wasps, and finds where the nest is, how it’s accessed and how big it is. We check eaves, wall cavities, roof voids, sheds, pergolas and the garden.
    Treatment plan icon

    3. We explain the plan

You’ll hear what we found, what we recommend and what it costs, and you decide before work begins. If native bees are involved, we’ll talk through what’s practical to minimise harm to them.
    Treatment icon

    4. Nest removal and cavity treatment

We remove the nest and treat the cavity as agreed in your plan. Which approach suits depends on the type of insect, where the nest is and how accessible it is. We’ll also advise on the entry point and on leftover comb or honey, which can draw other pests if it’s left in a wall.
    Follow-up icon

    5. Follow-up and prevention

You may still see some bees or wasps returning to the old spot for a short time, and some jobs need more than one visit. If activity continues after the expected time, contact our office and we’ll talk through the next step.
    Seasonal Guide

When Bees and Wasps Are Busiest in Doreen

Colonies follow a yearly cycle, so what you see depends on the season.

    ☀️ Summer (Dec–Feb)

Colonies are at their largest and wasp nests reach maximum size. Bees need lots of water, so expect more activity around pools and pet bowls.

    🍂 Autumn (Mar–May)

Wasps become more aggressive as nests die off, especially around outdoor food. Late summer and autumn is when European wasps are most troublesome.

    ❄️ Winter (Jun–Aug)

Honey bee colonies cluster inside their hive and activity drops. A good time to check eaves, vents and wall gaps before spring.

    🌸 Spring (Sep–Nov)

Bee swarms are common as colonies split. New wasp queens begin building nests in eaves. Ideal time for a preventive inspection.

Making Your Property Less Appealing to Bees and Wasps

You can’t make a property completely bee-proof, but you can make it less inviting to a colony looking for a home or a wasp looking for a free meal.

    Close up gaps

Inspect eaves, vents, weep holes, cracked render and gaps around pipes and cables. A gap about the size of your thumb is enough for a colony. Seal or screen them before spring, when swarms look for homes.

    Check sheds and old furniture

Old barbecues, empty water meter boxes, stacked pots, hollow posts and unused sheds all make great nesting spots. Look inside them before you reach in.

    Manage food and drinks

Wasps love protein and sweet things. Cover food and drinks outdoors, keep bins closed and pick up fallen fruit under trees.

    Look after water sources

Fix dripping taps, and give bees a safe spot to drink away from where you sit, like a shallow dish with pebbles at the far end of the garden.

    Keep gardens tidy

Trim dense shrubs and tidy woodpiles near the house. Check the ground for small holes along fences and under paving, which can mean a ground nest.

    Inspect each spring

Walk around the house and look up at the eaves early in spring. A small new nest is much easier to deal with than a big one.

    What Affects the Cost

The type of insect, the size and location of the nest, how easy it is to reach (a low eave versus a high roof void), whether the nest is inside a wall, and whether the visit is urgent or after hours. You’ll know the price before work begins. Our guide to what determines the cost of pest control in Doreen has more detail.

    Getting Ready for Your Visit

Keep people and pets well away from the nest, including children’s play areas and pet runs. Don’t disturb the entry point or try to block it. Make sure we can get to the area, including gates, ladders and roof hatches, and let us know about any steep or unsafe access. If you rent, let your landlord or property manager know about the visit. Our Pest Control Instructions page lists what to prepare for each type of problem, and areas that aren’t prepared may not be treated. If anyone at home is pregnant, elderly, very young, allergic to stings or has a breathing condition, tell us before we start.

    Bee Removal Doreen FAQs

How can I tell if it’s a bee or a wasp nest? +

Honey bees are golden-brown and slightly fuzzy, while European wasps are bright yellow and black, smooth and shiny. Paper wasps build open, papery nests under eaves, and many native bees are solitary and dig small burrows. A photo from a safe distance helps, and our technician confirms what you have during the inspection.

What should I do if a swarm lands in my yard? +

Keep people and pets well back and don’t disturb it. A swarm is usually resting while scouts look for a permanent home, and it often moves on within a day or two. If it stays, or settles somewhere awkward such as near an entry or play area, call us and we’ll talk through the options.

Can I remove a hive or nest myself? +

We don’t recommend it. A hive in a wall or roof is hard to reach, and disturbing it can set off a defensive response. Blocking the entrance or spraying it can send bees into the house. Call us and keep people and pets away from the area.

Will honeycomb be left behind after removal? +

It depends on where the colony was. Old comb and honey in a wall or ceiling can draw ants, rodents and other pests, and can cause odour. We’ll talk through what’s practical for your property, and we’ll advise on the entry point so a new colony isn’t drawn back.

How quickly can you come out for bees or wasps? +

For urgent situations we offer same-day response across Doreen and the City of Whittlesea, Monday to Sunday. Call 0399690821 or send an enquiry through the contact form, and we’ll confirm a visit time based on your location and how busy the day is.

What should I expect after the nest is removed? +

You may still see some bees or wasps returning to the old spot for a short time, and some jobs need more than one visit. If activity continues after the expected time, contact our office and we’ll talk through the next steps.

How much does bee removal cost in Doreen? +

It depends on the type of insect, the size and location of the nest, how easy it is to reach, whether it’s inside a wall, and whether the visit is urgent or after hours. You’ll know the price before work begins. Call 0399690821 or send an enquiry through the form on this page for a quote.
